Global Marketing (Barron's Business Library)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 1994)
Author: Richard L. Sandhusen
Average review score:

Global Marketing helps me counsel global firms.
As an international trade specialist, I must speak to 5-10 firms on international trade issues each day, and regularly deal with 20-30 firms actively engaged in entering and expanding into global markets. Global Marketing by Richard Sandhusen is one of the most effective tools in counseling these firms on global marketing; I especially appreciate the way the author fuses together broad concepts of international marketing with a realistic case study used throughout the book. Great Review book!
I spent a week or two going through it and got in the 95th percentile on the exam. It's comprehensive, though I have to say the test was dumbed down.

Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (Barron's Book Notes)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (December, 1985)
Authors: Elsa Dixler and Harriet Beecher Stowe
Average review score:

One of My All-time Favorites
I read this book originally to understand what was meant by the statement: "He's an Uncle Tom." This was usually said as a derogatoy statement. After reading the book I don't think this statement has been used correctly. As a Christian who loves the Lord I have to rate it as one of the best books that every Christian should read. I guess the derogatory statement comes from what looks like a black man being in willing submission to his master. From a Christian's point of view it is actually a man of God being in submission to His God.

As it was originally written to expose the life of slavery the book obviously does that very well. I heard that Abraham Lincoln said to Harriett Beecher Stowe upon meeting her, "So, you're the women responsible for starting the Civil War." Her account of slavery is vividally brutal.

With these two aspects in mind I can say that this book has a tremendous affect on my thinking. The horrors of slavery along w/the reality of God working in the lives of both 'slave & free' are what remain in my thoughts. After reading Uncle Tom's Cabin I'm reminded that we Christians are to have the heart of a servant following Jesus' example.

A shockingly truthful but great novel
This wonderful almost tearjerking novel is a must-reader. Eliza escaping the slavecatchers by grace of God and going into the hands of a protective Quaker settlement. Then Tom being sold, losing Eva, and then being sold again to a horrible bullet-headed man Simon Legree-finally to be whipped to death are just some powerful parts to name a few. There are slow parts, but they soon drop to places that leave your heart racing. This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.

Henry David Thoreau's Walden (Barron's Book Notes)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (November, 1984)
Authors: Henry David Thoreau and Linda Corrente
Average review score:

This timeless spiritual classic has a message for today.
"Only that day dawns to which we are awake. There is more day to dawn. The sun is but a morning star."

With these words, Henry Thoreau ended his world-famous masterpiece, "Walden", neatly summarizing the essence of both his book and his life: that we are all on a journey of awakening to the divine fullness of Life. Like the writings of great saints and mystics through time, "Walden" is less one man's philosophical musings than it is the ecstatic outpouring of a soul that has "dipped into the well of eternal Truths" and held up the dipper for the rest of us to drink from.

But the real wonder of "Walden" is that it speaks even more to the problems of our nation today than it did 150 years ago -- that we are living "lives of quiet desperation", our souls drowning in a sea of materialism and media messages, our natural environment poisoned and obliterated before our slightly-open eyes. We are out of touch with the rhythms of nature and with our own beingness.

Yet Thoreau does not merely describe the problems of our time, he gives specific solutions -- solutions that are increasingly respoken if not practiced: Follow a different drummer. Follow not your neighbor nor your parents nor anyone else, but follow the genius within yourself. Sit still and listen to the divine music within. Simplify.

There's a reason Thoreau's "Walden" has never been out of print since the 1860's, and possibly never will: it's a message we need to hear, more than ever.

How to Prepare for Sat II: Writing
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (February, 1994)
Authors: George Ehrenhaft and Barrons Educational Series
Average review score:

Great Book, bad error
I have enjoyed and been helped by the book. It has a wonderful format for anyone attempting to prepare for the SAT II: Writing in a short amount of time. In other words, I loved it. However, I do have one complaint. On page four, in the ninth line of the second paragraph, the author uses the phrase "lots of," an idiomatic expression later discussed as a major error in writing. I hope that, because of the context of the paragraph, I am right when I take this error in a humorous vein. However, one can only guess...
